Athena’s Shield: The Art of Self Protection

Date and Location:

Saturday, April 5th Time: 12:30 – 5:30 pm (mid-afternoon snack provided)

Blue Spark Art Studio (#210 – 2190 Fir Street, near West 6th Ave)

In this workshop we will:

• Honour what has wounded us and where we are vulnerable and where we are strong. • Explore magical and practical tools of self protection.

• Build a magical shield (materials provided including wood, hide, metal, and stones).

• Create pathways of knowing when to raise and when to lower our shields.

Some situations and circumstances are painful. They can leave us reeling, confused or feeling attacked. Other times we may find ourselves bundled up and over protected, regretting that our armour has isolated us from life. Here we will explore when to lower our shields and when to raise them using ritual and art to find balance, unexpected strengths, and ways of walking in the world. Come and explore the Art of Self Protection with us as we Wield the Shield. This work will be held in ritual space in a small intimate group.

Facilitators:

Bramble: Reclaiming Witch and Rosen Method Bodyworker. Her magical work centres on depth, presence and the textures of experience as a portal to mystery steeped in symbolism, myth and dreams. Bramble brings magic into everyday lived reality. Wild Grace: Art Therapist and Artist. She believes in the magical power of art-making as a way to ignite inner knowing and fuel our journeys into new knowing. Wild Grace loves to work with art-based healing tools that help keep our creative spark lit.

Cost:

$55 – $85, sliding scale – pay what you can.

Materials: provided.

Introduction to Reclaiming Witchcraft (Elements of Magic) – Victoria, BC

Combine your passion for the earth, activism and spirituality in this energetic tradition of ecstasy, community and deepening connections to the rhythms of the earth.
Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit. Explore the Elements. Flow down into the earth. Reach up into the sky. With trance, movement, chanting, story, earth magic, spellcrafting, raising energy, and ritual creation you will learn how to create sacred space and contain, sense and move energy, which is at the heart of all change and magical transformation. Walking our talk as beings of the earth, let’s listen deeper to the voices within and dance with what is revealed.

Based on the work of Starhawk and the Reclaiming Tradition, a practice of witchcraft based on ‘the understanding that the earth is alive and all of life is sacred and interconnected. We see the Goddess as immanent in the earth’s cycles of birth, growth, death, decay and regeneration. Our practice arises from a deep, spiritual commitment to the earth, to healing and to the linking of magic with political action.’ From the Reclaiming Principles of Unity.
Participants are asked to read the first six chapters of The Spiral Dance by Starhawk in preparation for this course.

Ruby has been an activist and Reclaiming Witch for longer than she can remember, in more ways than she can count. Steeped in the magic of the coastal rainforest, she brings her passion and pleasure of working magic and deep love of the earth and watery beings to all parts of her life. Living on the edge of the Salish Sea, she has worked for many years in ocean activism and loves teaching elemental magic.

Beet is a Reclaiming Witch from Victoria. Active in the community since 1995, she has learned all sorts of things that she now enjoys sharing in classes. Her favourite magical things are: drumming, chanting, tarot, creating mystical experiences, sharing ecstatic energy, communicating with the divine and telling stories. An intuitive reader by trade, she loves to highlight the magical in the mundane by pulling the curtains back with irreverent mirth. Her background in tarot, theatre, music, activism, community organization, and the intuitive arts inform her work in this class.

About the Samhain Ritual and Spiral Dance

Samhain (pronounced sow-in) or Hallowe’en is the New Year of the Witches, those who practice the ancient Earth-based Goddess traditions. This is the time when the veil that divides the worlds of the living and the dead is thin, when the Ancestors return to us, and the unborn possibilities of change circle around us. It is a time of power. We dance the spiral, the ancient dance of rebirth and renewal, and raise the power we need to realize our visions of healing and social change. (Adapted from “Let It Begin Now: Music from The Spiral Dance” by Starhawk, Reclaiming Collective and friends.)
